It is September now. It has been almost half a year since I last conducted an interview with Gardiner.
Times flies, literally… Life goes on and things change and don’t change…
Now Gardiner is back in Chicago, back to being a teacher with the new year unfolding.
She says life has been very busy with teaching. What a change of pace, I could only imagine, from being an artist free as a bird to being responsible for many young students.

２０２０年を振り返り、ちょうど去年の今頃シカゴの知人を介してガーディナーと出会ったなぁと思い起こしていました。本当に長くあっという間だった一年、世界中が常に繋がっている感覚だった一年。新しい年を迎え、最初のインタビューはガーディナーの今年への想いで始めたいなぁと思いました。今年はどんな年になるのでしょうか。また一年宜しくお願いします！

moreWhen Gardiner talks about her Japanese connection, she often mentions her stepmother, Japanese Canadian Connie. It seems that Gardiner’s interests in Japan became stronger around the time she was first introduced to Connie which is also when she moved to the west coast. I started my second interview by asking her about Connie.
more幼少時代は日本との繋がりが皆無に等しかったガーディナー。いつから日本に関心を持ち出したのでしょうか？聞いてみると、２０代で西海岸へ移住したのがきっかけだったとのこと。それと同じ時期に日系カナダ人のコニーが義母として家族の一員に加わった事も、ガーディナーと日本の間の距離がぐっと近くなる転機だった様です。
